| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell membrane/ plasma membrane | controls what gets in and out of the cell |
| centriole | Cell organelle that aids in cell division in animal cells only |
| cytoplasm | A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended |
| lysosomes | Uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts |
| cytoskeleton | helps the cell maintain its shape, supports the cell and is involved the movement of organelles |
| mitochondria | site of cell respiration, produces ATP (cellular energy) |
| ribosome | makes protein |
| smooth ER | An endomembrane system where some lipid hormones are made, calcium levels are regulated in muscle cells, and toxic substances are broken down. |
| Golgi apparatus | A system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins for export by the cell |
| nucleus | Control center of the cell. Contains DNA. |
| Rough ER | An endomembrane system covered with ribosomes where many proteins for transport are assembled. |
| cell wall | A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support and protection to the cell |
| chloroplast | An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs |
| chromoplast | type of plastid that stores pigments that are responsible for the bright colors in fruit and flowers |
| leucoplast | Organelles that stores food |
| vacuole | Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates |
| flagellum | whiplike tails found in one-celled organisms to aid in movement |
| cilia | Hairlike projections that extend from the plasma membrane and are used for locomotion |
