DNA Basics
Basic vocab over DNA structure
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| DNA | A nucleic acid in the shape of a double helix. It stores genetic information. |
| Guanine | a nitrogen base in DNA that pairs with cytosine |
| Cytosine | a nitrogen base in DNA that pairs with guanine |
| Thymine | a nitrogen base in DNA that pairs with adenine |
| Nucleotide | monomer of nucleic acids made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base |
| Adenine | a nitrogen base in DNA that pairs with thymine |
| Nitrogen bases | The chemicals that make up the rungs of the DNA ladder. A-T and C-G match. |
| Hydrogen bonds | The force that holds nitrogen bases together (A - T, G - C) |
| Sugar Phosphate Backbone | a repeating pattern of sugar-phosphate-sugar-phosphate that runs down both sides of DNA |
| Phosphate | Represented by a circle; one of the three parts of the nucleotide |
| Sugar | Represented by a house shape; one of the three parts of the nucleotide |
| Nitrogen Base | Represented by a box; one of the three parts of a nucleotide |
