Plant and Animal Cell Organelles
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Organelle | A structure inside a cell that performs a specialized function |
Cell Wall | PLANT CELL ONLY Sturdy barrier that supports and protects the plant cell Location: outermost layer |
Nucleus | Tells the cell what to do and holds the genetic material (DNA) "the brain of the cell" |
Cell Membrane | Surrounds the cell and controls what enters and exits the cell |
Mitochondria | Produces energy for the cell "powerhouse of the cell" |
Vacuole | Stores food, water, and waste LARGE in plant cells SMALL in animal cells |
Chloroplast | PLANT CELL ONLY Green; uses energy from the sun to produce food for the plant cell (photosynthesis) |
Cytoplasm | Jelly-like material inside the cell that protects and holds all the organelles in place |
Plant Cell Shape | Rectangular (because of cell wall) |
Animal Cell Shape | Round/Irregular |
