Plant and Animal Cell Organelles

| Organelle | A structure inside a cell that performs a specialized function |
| Cell Wall | PLANT CELL ONLY Sturdy barrier that supports and protects the plant cell Location: outermost layer |
| Nucleus | Tells the cell what to do and holds the genetic material (DNA) "the brain of the cell" |
| Cell Membrane | Surrounds the cell and controls what enters and exits the cell |
| Mitochondria | Produces energy for the cell "powerhouse of the cell" |
| Vacuole | Stores food, water, and waste LARGE in plant cells SMALL in animal cells |
| Chloroplast | PLANT CELL ONLY Green; uses energy from the sun to produce food for the plant cell (photosynthesis) |
| Cytoplasm | Jelly-like material inside the cell that protects and holds all the organelles in place |
| Plant Cell Shape | Rectangular (because of cell wall) |
| Animal Cell Shape | Round/Irregular |
