What is taxonomy? science of describing, naming, and classifying living and etinct organisms and viruses
What is systematics? study of biological diversity and the evolutionary relationships among organisms, both extinct and modern
What are the 7 eukaryotic supergroups? kingdom, phyla, class, order, family, genus, species
What is phylogeny? evolutionary history of a species or a group of species
What is anagensis? single species evolves into a different species
What is cladogensis? a species diverges into two or more species
What does a clade consist of? common ancestral species and all of its descendant species
What are the branch points in a phylogenetic tree called? nodes
what is a monophyletic group? contains a common ancestor and all of its descendants
What is a paraphyletic group? contains a common ancestor but not all of its descendants
What is a polyphyletic group? contains groups of species with different common ancestors
What is a branch point in a cladogram? two species differ in shared derived characters
What is a ingroup in a cladogram? group we are interested in
What is a outgroup in a cladogram? species or group of species that is assumed to have diverged before the species in the ingroup, will lack one or more shared derived characters that are found in the ingroup
