Scientific Method Biology Leaving Cert
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the first step of the Scientific Method? | Observation. |
| Second step of the Scientific Method? | Hypothesis - An idea created/formed based on your Observation. |
| The third step of the Scientific Method? | Experiment - An experiment based off of you Hypothesis, to prove/disprove your idea. |
| What is the fourth step of the Scientific Method? | Results - a series of results/data collected from the Experiment. |
| Fifth step of the Scientific Method? | Interpretation - Interpretation of the Data/Results collected to see if your idea was correct/incorrect |
| The sixth step of the Scientific Method? | Conclusion - If your Experiment Results were correct, you can reach the conclusion based around your Hypothesis showing your ideas and backing it up with evidence, this means that your idea is now a theory |
| If your Experiment Results don't give the data wanted what is the next step in the Scientific Method? | Return to the Hypothesis, reject, accept, change. Once this is done the hypothesis becomes a Theory |
| What is a Theory? | A Hypothesis proven to be true. |
| What is a Principle/Law? | A Principle/Law is a theory proven to be true multiple times by different scientists. |
| What are the four Principles of Experimentation? | - Careful planning and design - Ensuring safety -Design and Control/Variable -Ensure Fairness |
| Limitations of the Scientific Method? | -Extent of Knowledge - Basis of investigation - Results Interpretation - Changes in the natural world (ie Evolution) - Accidental discoveries -Religion and beliefs - Technology |
| Ethical Issues? 1 | - Experimentation on animals - Origin of life -Whether evolution took place or not - The way evolution took place |
| Ethical Issues? 2 | - Medical issues (ie Contraception) -Freezing of eggs, sperm and embryos - Use of stem cells for tissue regeneration - Use/development of modified plants/animals |
