702 Rep Isolation

honors

TermDefinition
Biological species concept - A population or group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring
Other species concepts - By these definitions, populations that meet the biological species criteria can still be regarded as different species Ex: two bird populations that could produce fertile offspring but never actually mate can be regarded as different species
Prezygotic barriers - A reproductive barrier that impedes mating between species Includes habitat, temporal, behavioral, mechanical, and gametic isolation
Reproductive barriers - anything that prevents individuals of closely related species from production viable, fertile offspring There are two types, prezygotic and postzygotic
Postzygotic barriers - prevent the hybrid zygote from developing into a viable, fertile adult
Habitat isolation - when closely related species are not separated by physical barriers but occupy different habitats and thus rarely encounter each other
Temporal isolation - when closely related species are not separated by physical barriers but having different breeding times
Behavioral isolation - when closely related species are not separated by physical barriers but have different mating calls or rituals
Mechanical isolation - when closely related species are not separated by physical barriers but have reproductive structures that are physical incompatible Ex: flowers that are pollinated by birds with differently shaped bills
Gametic isolation - when closely related species are not separated by physical barriers but their sperm and egg are not compatible AKA molecular incompatibility Ex: proteins on the membranes of certain sea urchin gametes prevent the male and female gametes from fusing
Hybrid - (In this context) the offspring of two different species
Reduced hybrid viability - when two species can mate and produce hybrid offspring, but those offspring are unlikely to survive
Reduced hybrid fertility - when two species can mate and produce hybrid offspring that can survive, but those offspring are infertile, meaning that cannot produce their own offspring
Hybrid breakdown - when two species can mate and produce hybrid offspring that can survive and are fertile, but subsequent generations of the hybrid are unable to survive

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
