TermDefinition
Anterior Front of an area in relationship to the entire body
Anatomic Nomenclature The system of names for anatomic structures
Ventral Directed toward the anterior
Posterior Back of an area in relationship to the entire body
superior An area that faces toward the head and away from the feet
Dorsal Directed toward the Posterior
Inferior An area that faces away from the head and toward the feet
Apex Or the tip is pointed end of the conical structure
Midsagital Divides body into equal right and left halves
Coronal Plane Frontal Plane Divides the body at any level into anterior and posterior parts
Transverse plane or Apex plane Divides the body at any level into superior and inferior parts
Sagittal Plane Divides the body parallel to midsagittal plane
Median An area closer to the midsagittal plane or median plane of the body structure
Medial A structure located at the midsagittal plane or median plane
Mesial The surface of the tooth, closet to the middle of front jaw
Superficial A structure located toward the surface of the body
Proximal An area closer to the midsagittal plane or median plane
Distal Farthest from the middle of the front jaw
Lateral An area farther from the midsagittal plane or median plane of the body
External The outer side of a hollow structure
Contralateral A structure on the opposite side of the body
Deep A structure located inward away from the body surface
Midsagittal A division by midsagittal (or median) plane
Internal The inner side of a hollow structure
Sagittal Section A division by any sagittal plane
Coronal Section or Frontal Section A division by any coronal ( or frontal ) plane
Transverse Section or Axial Section A division by any transverse ( or axial ) plane
