403 Nervous System

Nervous System - brain, spinal cord, nerves rapidly sends message example: the brain telling the legs to walk
neurons - nerve cells
Divisions of the Nervous System - central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
central nervous system - brain and spinal cord receive sensory information, interpret it, and sends commands to muscles
peripheral nervous system - the sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
sensory neurons - carry sensory information to the spinal cord and brain example: a doorknob feeling cold
motor neuron - carry commands from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles
the direction of information in the nervous system - stimulus - sensory neuron - spinal cord - brain - spinal cord - motor neuron - muscle
stimulus - A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react example: the bell at the end of class
action potential - nerve impulse information being sent in the nervous system
parts of a neuron - cell body, dendrites, axon
dendrites - receive messages from other cells
axons - Carry impulses away from the cell body
interneurons - neurons within the brain and spinal cord
