Term | Definition |
---|---|
Nervous System - | brain, spinal cord, nerves rapidly sends message example: the brain telling the legs to walk |
neurons - | nerve cells |
Divisions of the Nervous System - | central nervous system and peripheral nervous system |
central nervous system - | brain and spinal cord receive sensory information, interpret it, and sends commands to muscles |
peripheral nervous system - | the sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body |
sensory neurons - | carry sensory information to the spinal cord and brain example: a doorknob feeling cold |
motor neuron - | carry commands from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles |
the direction of information in the nervous system - | stimulus - sensory neuron - spinal cord - brain - spinal cord - motor neuron - muscle |
stimulus - | A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react example: the bell at the end of class |
action potential - | nerve impulse information being sent in the nervous system |
parts of a neuron - | cell body, dendrites, axon |
dendrites - | receive messages from other cells |
axons - | Carry impulses away from the cell body |
interneurons - | neurons within the brain and spinal cord |
