Homeostasis - | stable internal conditions |
Stimulus - | A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react Plural: stimuli |
Receptor - | a structure that detects a stimulus |
Control center - | A structure that decides if a stimulus must be responded to If it decides there needs to be a response, it instructs the effectors to respond |
Effectors - | carries out a response In negative feedback, this response brings conditions back to the set point In positive feedback, this response pushes conditions further from the set point |
Negative feedback loop - | a response that reverses a change Ex: an increase in blood sugar is a stimulus that produces a response that reduces blood sugar Most homeostatic feedback loops are negative |
Positive feedback loop - | a response that increases a change Ex: when platelets begin to clot, they release chemicals that tell other platelets to begin to clot |
