401 Body Systems

TermDefinition
Integumentary System - Consists of the skin, hair, and nails protects against infection, helps maintain body temperature, and helps keep from drying out
Nervous System - consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs Detects stimuli, interprets stimuli, and coordinates responses
Muscular System - Consists of muscles, tendons, and ligaments The ability of muscle cells to contract enables movement Muscles can also be used to generate heat such as when shivering
Skeletal System - Consists of bones and joints Protects and supports body organs and provides a framework the muscles use to support movement
Digestive System - Consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine Breaks food down, absorbs the nutrients in the food, and eliminates what is left over
Circulatory System - Consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood Transports nutrients and hormones throughout the body
Respiratory System - Consist of the air passages and lungs Exchanges gases with the environment Oxygens diffuses into the blood Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood
Endocrine System - Consists of glands Secretes hormones Ex: growth hormone produced during childhood helps determine the length of bones
The Lymphatic System - Consists of lymph, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes Collects fluids that have seeped out of the circulatory system and returns that fluid to the circulatory system
Hormones - Chemicals used as messengers and produced by glands
Glands - Structures that secrete hormones
Excretory System - the system that removes waste from your body and controls water balance The urinary system is a subdivision of the excretory system The urinary system filters nitrogenous wastes from the blood and excretes them during urination
Reproductive System - Consists of sex organs, hormones, and gametes Enables the conception and nurturing of offspring
