Graze - to feed on growing grass
overgraze - to allow livestock to strip areas so bare that plants cannot grow back
livestock - farm animals
Over hunting - When people hunt a species until it cannot recover
Roles trees play - Nests for birds and other animals Food for organisms that eat its leaves and fruit Indirectly provides food for organisms that prey on animals that live and feed on trees Produce oxygen Provide shade
logging - Cutting down trees
preservation - Maintenance of a resource in its present condition, with as little human impact as possible.
conservation - Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment
wildlife reserve - An area of land set aside by the government for wild animals and plants to live in protection
Endangered Species Act of 1973 - A law requiring the federal government to protect all species listed as endangered
Clean Water Act of 1972 - Law intended to clean up the nation's rivers and lakes.
Clean Air Act of 1970 - The law aimed at combating air pollution by charging the EPA with protecting and improving the quality of the nation's air.
Sustainability - meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs Related: sustainable
Over harvesting - catching or removing from a population more organisms than the population can replace
Desertification - the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
