104 Experimentation

QuestionAnswer
Science - An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world involves making observations, forming hypotheses, testing hypotheses, collecting data, and analyzing data
Observation - Information obtained through the senses
qualitative observation - Data not in the form of numbers example: tastes sour
quantitative observation - Data that is in numbers example: 10 centimeters
controlled experiment - Involves at least two test groups everything is kept the same between both groups except a single variable example: Francesco Redi sealing one jar and not sealing the other jar
independent variable - The experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied The one thing that is different between the experimental group and the control group Example: the cover on one of the jars in Francesco Reid's experiment
dependent variable - The measurable effect of the independent variable Example: the lack of maggots in the sealed jar
control group - In an experiment, the group that is not exposed to the independent variable Example: the unsealed jar in Redi's experiment
experimental group - In an experiment, the group that is exposed to the independent variable Exampled: the sealed jar in Redi's experiment
Data - information gathered from observations
Hypothesis - a claim a testable prediction
Hypotheses - plural of hypothesis pronounced high-PAW-thuh-seez
claim - an assertion about what is true or what will happen can be tested
if...then statements - statements in which one asserts that if they do X, then Y will happen Example: If I study, I will get an A Hypotheses take this form
