Unit 1 - Study of life

TermDefinition
Matter Something that takes up space.
Element A substance that can't be broken down into smaller substances.
Nucleus Protons and neutrons binding together to form the nucleus from the atom
Hypothesis A suggested explanation of an event, which can be tested.
Scientific Method A method of research, with defined steps, experiments and careful observations
Theory A tested and confirmed explanation of observation or phenomenon
Abstract Opening section of a scientific paper that summarizes the research and conclusions
Applied Science A form of science that aims to solve real-world problems
Atom The smallest and most fundamental unit of matter that retains the properties of an element
Basic Science Using science as a tool to learn and gain knowledge
Biochemistry The study of the chemistry of biological organisms
Biology Studies of living things and how they interact with each other
Biosphere A collection of all the ecosystems on Earth
Cell The smallest fundamental unit of structure and function in living things
Community A set of populations inhabiting a particular area
Conclusion Section of a scientific paper that summarizes the importance of the experimental findings
Control Part of an experiment that does not change during the experiment
Deductive Reasoning A form of logical thinking that uses a general inclusive statement to forecast specific results
Descriptive Science (also, discovery science) form of science that aims to observe, explore, and investigate
Ecosystem All the living things in a particular area together with the abiotic, nonliving parts of that environment
Eukaryote An organism with cells that have nuclei and membrane-bound organelles
Evolution The process of gradual change during which new species arise from older species and some species become extinct
Homeostasis The ability of an organism to maintain constant internal conditions
Hypothesis A suggested explanation for an observation, which can be tested
Inductive Reasoning A form of logical thinking that uses related observations to arrive at a general conclusion
Life Science The field of science, such as biology, that studies living things
Macro-molecule A large molecule, typically formed by the joining of smaller molecules
Molecular Biology The study of biological processes and their regulation at the molecular level, including interactions among molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins
Molecule A chemical structure consisting of at least two atoms held together by one or more chemical bonds
Organelle Small structures that exist within cells and carry out cellular functions
Peer-reviewed manuscript A scientific paper that is reviewed by a scientist’s colleagues who are experts in the field of study
Phylogenetic tree A diagram showing the evolutionary relationships among various biological species based on similarities and differences in genetic or physical traits or both; in essence, a hypothesis concerning evolutionary connections
Prokaryote Single-celled organism that lacks organelles and does not have nuclei surrounded by a nuclear membrane
Serendipity Fortunate accident or a lucky surprise
Variable Part of an experiment that the experimenter can vary or change
Acid molecule that donates hydrogen ions and increases the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
Adhesion attraction between water molecules and other molecules
Anion negative ion that is formed by an atom gaining one or more electrons
Atom the smallest unit of matter that holds and elements chemical properties
AtomicMass the calculated mean of mass for its naturally occurring isotopes, can result in a fraction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
