Osmosis/Diffusion

QuestionAnswer
Define osmosis Water molecules moving across a semi-permeable membrane in order to reach a state of equilibrium.
Define diffusion Molecules moving down a concentration gradient to reach a state of equilibrium.
Define concentration gradient The difference in concentration (amounts) of molecules in different areas. Ex: more water outside a cell than inside a cell, or air freshener sprayed in one corner of a room
Define semi-permeable Something that allows some materials through but not others
Define passive transport When molecules move down the concentration gradient. This does NOT require energy (think about going down a slide)
Define homeostasis A stable internal environment
