science | a search for the laws of nature and for ways to use them for the benefit of mankind. |
pollen | the yellow "dust" that flowers use in producing seeds. |
nectar | a sweet liquid made by flowers in order to attract insects. |
hibernate | to sleep through the winter. |
migrate | to move from one place to another with the changing seasons |
predator | an animal that captures and feeds upon other living animals. |
larva | an immature insect that does not look like the adult. |
mimicry | the close resemblance of one plant or animal to another for some purpose. |
food chain | a series of plants and animals, each depending on the next for food; almost always begins with a green plant. |
invertebrate | an animal with no backbone |
camouflage | the ability to blend in with one's background |
ovipositor | an egg-laying body part |
maggots | larvae of flies |
goldenrod | a flowering plant (composite) that is often mistaken for ragweed; does not cause pollinosis (hay fever). |
composite | the largest family of flowering plants; means "made of many parts". |
