genetic code
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Genetic code | sequence of nucleotides in DNA Code contains instructions for the order &type of amino acids in polypeptide chain that will form a protein |
3 types of rna | Messenger RNA (mRNA) Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) Transfer RNA (tRNA) |
Messenger RNA (mRNA) | Rna molecle that transfers coded inforrmation from nucleus to ribosome Made in nucleus (transcription) & takes the genetic code for making protein to the ribosomes |
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) | RNA molecule that form part of ribosomes (~60% of mass of a ribosome, other 40% - proteins) Ensures that correct alignment of mRNA, tRNA & ribosome rRNA also has an enzymatic role in the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids |
Transfer RNA (tRNA) | An rna molecule that brings amino acids from the cytoplasm to the ribosomes Small molecules of rna (70-90 nucleotides) & folded ‘clover-leaf’ structure |
The role of dna is | to store the instructions for making proteins. DNA is ‘read’ in sequence from 5’ennd to 3’end of molecule 3 bases = 1 amino acid |
