| What is the difference between woody and herbaceous stems? | Woody stems are hard and woody and grow thicker with age by adding cells to their vascular cambium. They cannot perform photosynthesis. Herbaceous stems are soft and green and can perform photosynthesis and feed the plant. They grow longer by adding cells to the end of the stem. |
| What is phototropism? | When plants use special chemicals to make their stems bend and twist to turn toward the light. |
| What are the special chemicals called that enable a plant to grow toward the light? | Auxins |
| What would happen if a plant did not have a stem? | The plants would not be able to lift their bodies above the ground. The stem is sort of like the plant's spinal column, giving it its form. |
