Lesson 6: Leaves
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Why are leaves of a plant so important? | Because they make food for the plant. |
Can you explain to someone what the stomata do for a plant? | They take in air to help make the food the plant needs. |
Explain what would happen if a plant lost all its leaves. | It would die of starvation because it would have no way of getting the chemicals from the air it needs to make food. |
What does a plant take in from the air and what does it put back into the air? | It takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. |
Explain photosynthesis in your own words. | It's the process of a plant using energy from light to help put together carbon dioxide and water in order to make sugar and oxygen. The plant uses the sugar for food then releases the oxygen into the air for us to breathe. |
What are the four things a plant needs to make food? | Water, carbon dioxide, light, and chlorophyll |
What kind of food does the plant make? | Sugar |
What happens when one ingredient is removed? | The plant is unable to perform photosynthesis and will eventually die. |
What makes leaves green? | Chlorophyll |
What is microscopic? | Something that is too small to see with just your eyes |
What is a stomata? | They are little "mouths" on the bottom side of every leaf |
What is a stoma? | When there is only one mouth on the bottom of a leaf |
Why are we called consumers? | We consume or eat plants or other creatures. |
Why are plants producers? | They make or produce their own food. |
What chemical in the air do leaves use to make food for a plant? | Carbon dioxide |
How are plants important for our survival? | They release oxygen into the air for us to breathe. |
What is photosynthesis? | A plant, with the help of light, puts together carbon dioxide and water to make sugar and oxygen. |
What do plants need to perform photosynthesis? | Light |
What is transpiration? | It is when the stomata of a plant releases excess water from the plant that comes up from the roots. |
What makes a plant lose its leaves in the fall? | Transpiration |
What are deciduous plants and trees? | They are the plants and trees that lose their leaves in the fall before winter sets in. |
Why do deciduous plants and trees lose their leaves? | They do it so they won't lose water through transpiration |
What happens to a leaf if it can't get water? | The leaf quits performing photosynthesis and no longer makes chlorophyll. Because it no longer makes chlorophyll, the leaf begins to lose its green color. |
What is the anatomy, or individual parts, of a leaf? | Apex, margin, midrib, veins, base, and lamina |
What is the apex of a leaf? | the very tip of the leaf |
What is the margin of a leaf? | the edge that surrounds the leaf |
What is the midrib of a leaf? | the main vein of the leaf |
