| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Finite | Limited; the opposite of infinite. |
| Autotroph | Organisms that harness the sun's energy and intake carbon during the process of photosynthesis. |
| Heterotroph | Organisms that must consume or break down other organisms to get their nutrients and energy. |
| Combustion | Burning of organic matter/materials. |
| Organic | Of or coming from living things. |
| Inorganic | Not originating from or exclusive to living things. |
| Reservoir | Parts of the Earth that store carbon. |
| Carbon sink | Where carbon is stored in relatively high volume. |
| Carbon source | Where carbon is released in relatively high volume. |
| Weathering | Geochemical process by which rocks and minerals are worn and broken down. |
| Deposition | Geochemical process by which sediments are deposited in new places. |
| Respiration | Biochemical process by which living things get ATP energy from gases and organic nutrients. |
| Biosphere | Anywhere on Earth life is found. |
| Atmosphere | The mixture of gases surrounding the planet. |
| Hydrosphere | Anywhere on Earth water is found. |
