heart & cardiac cycl

heart

QuestionAnswer
Cardiac cycle (heart beat): sequence of events that occur in one complete beat of the heart
3 main phases of cardiac cycle Diastole Atrial systole Ventricular systole
Diastole Atria fills with blood & ventricles also recieve blood as the AV valves open Semi-lunar valves are closed Systole: pumping phase of the cycle when heart muscle contracts
Atrial systole Atria contracts & forces remaining blood in the atria into ventricles Av valves are open Semi-lunar valves are closed
Ventricular systole artia relaxes (and begins to refill) while the ventricles contract, forcing blood into pulmonary artery & aorta This action opens the semi-lunar valves & closes the AV valves
Heart sounds ‘lubb-dupp’ Lubb sound is caused by closing of the artioventricular valves immediately after both the ight&left ventricles contract Dupp sound is caused by theee closing of the semi-lunar valves

Heart a pump made up of cardiac muscle tissues Pumps blood around the body • Located between the 2 lungs in the mediastinum (a membranous structure between 2 organs) behind & slightly to the left of the sternum
pericardium o Membrane that holds the heart in place o Function: protection & allows the heeart to move as it beeats, but not over stretch. Lubricates heart to prevent friction as it beats
The heart is described as a double pump • Right side of heart pumps blood to lungs - pulmonary circulation (Vena cava → RA → RV → pulmonary artery → lungs) • Left side of heart pumps blood to the rest of the body - systematic circulation (Pulmonary vein, LA LV aorta ,body tissue →vena cava
Valves a flap located in thee circulatory system used to control blood flow in heart & ensure blood can only flow in one direction
atrioventricular • Located between each atrium & ventricle • Prevent back flow of blood from ventricle into atria, when ventricle contract more blood flows into the arteries, by blood causing flaps of Av valve to billow out & close • Chordea tendineae prevent valves fro, turning inside out
semi-lunar • Located base of 2 main arteries that connect to ventricles • Prevent back flow of blood in ventricles from pulmonary artery or aorta • When pumped, cusps of valves are pressed against artery wall & valves open
