Enzyme Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Enzyme protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body
Catalyst substance that speeds chemical reactions
Substrate chemical that is being changed by the enzyme
Reactants chemicals that change during a reaction
Products chemicals that are formed as a result of a reaction
Active Site the place on the enzyme where the substrate binds
Optimal conditions the pH and temperature at which an enzyme works the fastest (highest activity)
Denature when enzymes change shape and lose function because of poor conditions
Digestion (hydrolysis) large molecules (polymers) are broken apart into smaller molecules (monomers)
Synthesis small molecules (monomers) are put together to form larger molecules (polymers)
