| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Enzyme | protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body |
| Catalyst | substance that speeds chemical reactions |
| Substrate | chemical that is being changed by the enzyme |
| Reactants | chemicals that change during a reaction |
| Products | chemicals that are formed as a result of a reaction |
| Active Site | the place on the enzyme where the substrate binds |
| Optimal conditions | the pH and temperature at which an enzyme works the fastest (highest activity) |
| Denature | when enzymes change shape and lose function because of poor conditions |
| Digestion (hydrolysis) | large molecules (polymers) are broken apart into smaller molecules (monomers) |
| Synthesis | small molecules (monomers) are put together to form larger molecules (polymers) |
