DNA and RNA
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| DNA | Deoxyribonucleic Acid - double helix was discovered by Watson and Crick |
| Nucleotides | - The subunit of a nucleic acid - 3 parts: Deoxyribose sugar Phosphate Base |
| The Four Bases of Nucleotides | - Adenine - Guanine - Cytosine - Thymine |
| Genes | A sequence of nucleotides which codes for the synthesis of a protein |
| Gene Expression | When a gene is decoded into a sequence of amino acids |
| Non-coding DNA (Junk DNA) | They do not code for the production of any protein |
| DNA Triplet (Codons) | A sequence of bases that codes for one amino acid |
| Genome | An organism's complete set of DNA, including it's genes |
| RNA | Ribonucleic Acid |
| Three Different types of RNA | - Messenger RNA - Ribosomal RNA - Transfer RNA |
| Messenger RNA | A complementary copy of a gene |
| Ribosomal RNA | Forms the ribosome that translate the mRNA transcripts and make the proteins required by the cell |
| Transfer RNA | Carries Amino acids to the ribosomes for protein synthesis |
