Defence System

Definitions for the chapter

TermDefinition
Active Immunity Antibodies produced by the person's body. Long term protection against disease.
Antibody A protein produced by lymphocytes in response to an antigen
Antigen A foreign molecule that stimulates the production of antibodies
B Cells Lymphocytes that are produced and mature in the bone marrow - produce antibodies
Immunity The ability to resist infection
Induced immunity The protection against diseases by vaccination or antibodies
Lymphocytes Type of white blood cells
Monocytes White blood cells that engulf foreign bodies
Passive Immunity Antibodies from another organism enter the persons body, short term protection against disease
Pathogen A disease causing microorganism
T Cells Lymphocytes that are produced in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus - four types.
Vaccine A specially prepared, non-disease causing dose of a pathogen, which stimulates the production of antibodies
Exhalation Passive process, pushing carbon dioxide rich air out of the lungs
Inhalation Active process, pulling oxygenated air into the lungs
