Definitions for the chapter
| Term | Definition |

| Active Immunity | Antibodies produced by the person's body. Long term protection against disease. |
| Antibody | A protein produced by lymphocytes in response to an antigen |
| Antigen | A foreign molecule that stimulates the production of antibodies |
| B Cells | Lymphocytes that are produced and mature in the bone marrow - produce antibodies |
| Immunity | The ability to resist infection |
| Induced immunity | The protection against diseases by vaccination or antibodies |
| Lymphocytes | Type of white blood cells |
| Monocytes | White blood cells that engulf foreign bodies |
| Passive Immunity | Antibodies from another organism enter the persons body, short term protection against disease |
| Pathogen | A disease causing microorganism |
| T Cells | Lymphocytes that are produced in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus - four types. |
| Vaccine | A specially prepared, non-disease causing dose of a pathogen, which stimulates the production of antibodies |
| Exhalation | Passive process, pushing carbon dioxide rich air out of the lungs |
| Inhalation | Active process, pulling oxygenated air into the lungs |
