Definitions for the chapter

Asexual reproduction (vegetative propagation) Involves only one parent and offspring are identical
Bulb Modified bud
Cross pollination The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma on a different plant of the same species
Dispersal The transfer of seeds away from the parent plant
Dormancy Resting period with reduced cell metabolism and no growth
Endospermic seed Contains two food stores, the endosperm and cotyledon
Plant Fertilisation Male and female haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote and triploid endosperm
Gametes Haploid sex cells
Germination Regrowth of the embryo following a period of dormancy
Micropropagation Artificial vegetative propagation using tissue culture
Non-endospermic seed Contains only one food store, the cotyledon
Pollination The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma
Runners Horizontal modified stems
Sexual reproduction Involves two parents and the fusion of gametes
Tubers Swollen underground modified stem
Adhesion Different molecules sticking together, such as water to walls of xylem
Cohesion Similar molecules sticking together, such as water molecules
Meristem A plant tissue capable of rapid mitosis/an area of active cell division
Transpiration The loss of water vapour from the surface of a leaf by evaporation
Response Any change that happens as a result of a stimulus
Stimulus Any change in the environment that creates a response
Tropism The growth of a plant in response to an external stimulus
Phototropism Growth response of a stem towards light
Growth regulator A chemical that controls the growth of a plant
