Enzymes
Definitions for the chapter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Active site | The part of the enzyme that joins with the substrate |
| Anabolic reaction | Smaller molecules are joined to produce larger molecules, energy is required |
| Bioprocessing | The use of enzyme controlled reactions to produce a product |
| Bioreactor | A vessel in which living things are used to make a product, usually a steel vat |
| Catabolic reaction | Larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules, energy is released |
| Catalyst | A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up in that reaction |
| Denatured | When an enzyme loses its shape and can no longer function permanently |
| Enzyme | A protein catalyst that speeds up a reaction |
| Enzyme specificity | Each enzyme will react with only one particular substrate |
| Immobilised | Enzymes that are trapped in a gel or fixed to an inert material |
| Metabolism | The sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism |
| Optimum | The best possible conditions for enzyme activity |
| Substrate | The substance with which an enzyme reacts |
| Product | The substance formed by the enzyme |
