Enzymes

Definitions for the chapter

TermDefinition
Active site The part of the enzyme that joins with the substrate
Anabolic reaction Smaller molecules are joined to produce larger molecules, energy is required
Bioprocessing The use of enzyme controlled reactions to produce a product
Bioreactor A vessel in which living things are used to make a product, usually a steel vat
Catabolic reaction Larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules, energy is released
Catalyst A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up in that reaction
Denatured When an enzyme loses its shape and can no longer function permanently
Enzyme A protein catalyst that speeds up a reaction
Enzyme specificity Each enzyme will react with only one particular substrate
Immobilised Enzymes that are trapped in a gel or fixed to an inert material
Metabolism The sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism
Optimum The best possible conditions for enzyme activity
Substrate The substance with which an enzyme reacts
Product The substance formed by the enzyme
