Who is the 'father of genetics' and why? Gregor Mendel for discovering the dominant and recessive alleles
What is the phenotype? The physical representation
What is the genotype?
What is Mendel's first law of segregation? A characteristic is controlled by 2 alleles which seperate at gamete formation (eg: Tt---> meiosis---> T and t)
What is Mendel's second law of assortment? Either members of a pair pf alleles can pass into a gamete with either member of another pair of alleles (eg: YyRr----> meiosis--->YR, Yr, yR, yr)
What is linkage? When the genes for different characteristics are located on the same chromosomes
What is the locus? The position of a gene on a chromosome
What term is used to describe someone that has the gene for a sex linked disorder but does not exhibit the condition? A carrier
What is meant by the term sex-linkage? Genes found on the sex/X chromosome
What does heterozygous mean? Genotype has different alleles
What does homozygous mean? Genotype has the same alleles
What is a gene? A section of DNA that has the code for the production of protein
