Photo/Respiration

Definitions for photosynthesis and respiration as well as diffusion

TermDefinition
Phosphorylation The addition of a phosphate to a molecule
Photolysis The splitting of water by light
Photosynthesis The production of a carbohydrate (glucose) using light energy
ATP Adenosine Triphosphate
NAD/NADP Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucelotide (phosphate) - low energy carrier
Aerobic respiration The release of energy from food in the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration The release of energy from food without the presence of oxygen e.g fermentation
Fermentation Anaerobic respiration
Active transport Movement of molecules from low concentration to high concentration requiring the use of energy
Diffusion Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Osmosis The movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration
Plasmolysis When the cell membrane shrivels away from the cell wall in a plant cell
Semi-permeable Allows some molecules to pass through but not all
Solvent A liquid that dissolves other substances
Turgid When osmosis causes water to move into a plant cell wall causing the cytoplasm and vacuole to swell and push against the cell wall
Turgor pressure The pressure of the vacuole and cytoplasm against the cell wall of a plant

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
