| Continuity of life | The ability of organisms to exist from one generation to the next |
| Eukaryote | Cells with a nucleus and membrane enclosed organelles |
| Prokaryote | Cells that do not have a nucleus or membrane enclosed organelles |
| Cancer | A process where cells lose their ability to control the rate of mitosis they undergo |
| Carcinogens | Cancer causing agents |
| Cell continuity | The ability of cells to divide and survive from one generation to another |
| Chromosomes | Coiled threads of DNA and protein that become visible in the nucleus at cell division |
| Cytokinesis | The physical division of a cell which occurs after nuclear division in which one cell divides to become two cells |
| Diploid | Two sets of chromosomes |
| Haploid | One set of chromosomes |
| Gamete | Haploid cells capable of fusion i.e a sex cell |
| Meiosis | A form of nuclear division in which the daughter nuclei contain half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell |
| Mitosis | A form of nuclear division in which one nucleus divides to form two daughter nuclei each containing identical sets of chromosomes |
| Organ | A group of tissues working together to carry out a specific function |
| Organ system | A group of organs working together to carry out a specific function |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells working together with the same structure and function |
| Tissue culture | The growth of tissues on or in an artificial medium outside an organism |
