Metaphor A language technique where the poet compares two different things and, as a result, reveals their similarities
Personification A language technique where non- human things are given human characteristics
Alliteration Repeating the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words
Assonance Repeating similar vowel sounds in a series of words or phrases
Onomatopoeia When a word sounds like what it describes
Annotation When a reader makes notes on a text by flagging or highlighting important details
Quotation A phrase or line taken directly from the text
Inference Finding exact clues in the text and using your own background knowledge to come up with an idea not stated obviously in the text
