BIO Lab Exam #3

QuestionAnswer
What are the traits of Archaea? Prokaryotic cells, found in extreme environments
What are the traits for Bacteria? Prokaryotic cells, bacteria with unique biochemical features
What are the traits for Eukarya Protists? Eukaryotic cells, single cell organisms and some simple multicellular organisms, autotrophic or heterotrophic, motile or non-motile
What are the traits for Eukarya Plants? Eukaryotic cells, multicellular, autotrophic, non-motile
What are the traits for Eukarya Fungi? Eukaryotic cells, multicellular, heterotrophic-absorptive, non-motile
What are the traits for Eukarya Animals? Eukaryotic cells, multicellular, heterotrophic-ingestive, generally motile
What is a cellular level of organization? Has different cells specialized for particular functions but does not have tissues or organs
What is Organ system Level organization? Has tissues that work together for a common function to produce organ systems such as the digestive or circulatory system
What is symmetrical? When an animal can be divided into equivalent halves
What is bilateral symmetry? only one way to divide the animal so that both halves are the same size and shape
What is Radial symmetry? can be divided in more than one way
What is asymmetrical? Showing no symmetry
What is an incomplete digestive system? One opening that serves as a mouth an an anus
What is a complete digestive systems? Two openings (mouth and anus) at opposite ends of a tube that is modified along its length for specialized function
How do simple animals exchange gases? Through their surface
How do aquatic animals exchange gases? Through gills, a complex of filaments
How do terrestrial animals exchange gases? Through a series of tubes, tracheae that brings oxygen from their air directly to all the cells of the animal
What is a circulatory system? to transport nutrients to all of the cells and to carry away wastes
What type of circulation do cell layered animals have? Diffusion
What is an open circulatory system? The blood vessels are open ended and the blood flows freely among the cells
What is a closed circulatory system? The blood vessels make a continuous loop and the blood remains contained within them
What is a hydrostatic skeleton? Fluid filled cavity
What is an exoskeleton? a hard covering on the outside
What is an endoskeleton? hard parts such as bones inside the body
What happens when an animal has no symmetry? The animal grows in all directions, usually on the surface of something else, and is non-motile
What are phylum porifera? Sponges
What are the characteristics of phylum porifera? a phylum of simple aquatic invertebrates with no symmetry (few are radial) and only a cell level of organization
What are phylum cnidaria? jellyfish, sea anemones, coral, and freshwater Hydra
What are the characteristics of phylum cnidara? a phylum of aquatic invertebrates with radial symmetry. Cnidarians are characterized by their simple pouch-like body (gastrovascular cavity), tentacles, and stinging cells
What are phylum flatworms? Planaria and tapeworms
What are the characteristics of phylum flatworms? aquatic or terrestrial invertebrates with soft, flattened, worm-like body that posses a distinct head region and an incomplete digestive system
