| Personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form |
| Alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. |
| Idioms | a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words |
| Simile | a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid |
| Active Voice | the person or thing represented by the grammatical subject performs the action represented by the verb |
| Passive Voice | when the subject of a sentence receives the action of the verb rather than performing the action |
| Parallelism | the use of successive verbal constructions in poetry or prose which correspond in grammatical structure, sound, meter, meaning |
| Inference | a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. |
| Narrative | a spoken or written account of connected events; a story. |
| Fiction | literature in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people. |
| Nonfiction | prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history. |
