TermDefinition
Personification the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form
Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
Idioms a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words
Simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid
Active Voice the person or thing represented by the grammatical subject performs the action represented by the verb
Passive Voice when the subject of a sentence receives the action of the verb rather than performing the action
Parallelism the use of successive verbal constructions in poetry or prose which correspond in grammatical structure, sound, meter, meaning
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Narrative a spoken or written account of connected events; a story.
Fiction literature in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people.
Nonfiction prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history.
