cartilage OFFICIAL

QuestionAnswerexample
hyaline cartilage - closely packed collagenous fibres - very, very fine - provide support w/ flexibility - nasal septum - trachea & bronchi - support larynx
elastic cartilage - not as closely packed - conspicuous elastic - - more stretchy elastic stand up after repeat bending - external auricle of ear - epiglottis - auditory tube - larynx (cuneiform)
fibrocartilage - coarse appearance - thick fibres - not as compact - highly compressible - great tensile strength - pads knee joint - pubic bone (between pelvis) - intervertebrae disc
Cartilage A connective tissue containing fibres called collagen Like all connective tissues, cartilage has 2 main characteristics
2 main characteristics Non living matrix Consists of water: accounts for its ability to spring back to its original shape Contains numerous fibres made of a protein called collagen which are embedded in a firm matrix of protein - carbohydrate complex called chondrin Living cells (not packed together) 2 major types of cells Chondroblasts - grow new cartilage by producing matrix Chondrocytes - mature cartilage cells typically foundin small groups within cavities called lucunae
perichondrium Cartilage is surrounded by a fibrous membrane Acts to resists outward expansion when cartilage is compressed Contains the blood vessels from which nutrients slowly diffuse through the matrix to reach cartilage cells internally as no nerves or blood vessels are present (avascular)
