Intro to Protists

BIO Lab Exam 3

QuestionAnswer
The Three Domains of Life Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukaryotes
Bacteria and Archaea are Prokaryotic
Eukaryotes include Fungi, Plants, Animals, and Protists
Protists are any eukaryotes that are not fungi, plants, or animals
Protist Nutrition are Autotroph, Heterotroph, and Mixotroph
Autotrophs are self feeders
Heterotrophs are Parasites
Mixotrophs are Both heterotrophic and autotrophic, depending on the conditions
Types of protists Unicellular, colonial, and multicellular
How are unicellular, colonial, and multicellular protists grouped in evolutionary relationships? By the basis of locomotion, how they obtain energy, or similarities in life cycles
Ciliates are Protists
Where are cilia located? On some of the cells in the human respiratory tract
How do cilia move? Small-hair like structures covers parts of the cell and beat in unison creating motion for a cell in multiple directions
How do amoeboid protists use their shape to eat prey? Are "blob" like and encased in "shells" of calcium carbonate (chalk) or silicon dioxide (quartz) and engulf prey by phagocytosis
What are amoeboid represented by? Heterotrophs and photoautotrophs
How do flagellates move? a whip-like flagella that push or pull the cell through a liquid medium
What is a well known flagellate? Euglena, which is capable of photosynthesis and can feed off of smaller cells and organic debris
Euglenoids are organisms that are referred as Mixotroph since it is heterotrophic and autotrophic
