Life Cycles

Unit 9: Investigating Life Cycles

TermDefinition
life cycle * The particular way a living thing grows, reproduces, and dies * Stages of growth and development in order that an organism goes through in its lifetime
stage A single step in a process.
growth An increase in size.
offspring * A child, baby animal, or seeds * An organism that is born
eggs The first (1st) stage in the life cycle for many organisms.
larva * The second (2nd) stage in a life cycle. * A small, worm like stage in some insects
pupa * The third (3rd) stage in a life cycle. * Some insects go into a cocoon (chrysalis) when the organism changes from a larva to an adult.
adult * The last stage in a life cycle * Fully grown plants or animals * Adults will have offspring to start the life cycle over
metamorphosis The changes of form that some insects go through during their life cycle.
nymph * A young life cycle stage in some insects. * The do not become a pupa, they just gradually grow into an adult.
germinate * A period in a plant's life cycle when a seed begins to grow - the first root. * Roots then sprout up through the ground - seedling/sprout
seedling * A young plant starting to grow from a seed. * It starts sprouting through the ground.
sprout * A young plant breaking through the ground.
