Annealing The addition of primers in a cooling stage to make double stranded DNA and allow for Taq attachment
Extension The repair of each half of the DNA strand between two primers when the sample is heated to 72 degrees C
Denaturation The separation of double-stranded DNA into a single strand
Thermal Cycler An instrument that automatically cycles through different temperatures required for PCR
Primers A strand of nucleotides that serves as a starting point for DNA synthesis
Taq Polymerase A DNA synthesis enzyme that has been designed to withstand high temperatures of PCR
Purpose of PCR To produce multiple copies of a specific DNA sequence
CRISPR A naturally occurring mechanism in bacteria that involves the retention of foreign DNA fragments, our future in gene editing
Vector an agent that contains or carries modified genetic material and can be used to introduce extra genes into the genome of an organism
Gene therapy the alteration of genes of a person afflicted with a genetic disease
Plasmid a circular DNA molecule found in prokaryotes and some eukaryotic cells
Liposome a spherical vesicle surrounded by a lipid bilayer
Herpes Virus a virus known to cause herpes type 1 and type 2 infections in humans, but can be inactivated and used to large genes to nervous system cells
Adeno-associated virus a virus that infects primates, but does not cause disease currently and can carry small genes into a variety of cell types
Adenovirus a virus known to cause a variety of illnesses in humans, but can be inactivated to carry small genes efficiently.
Retrovirus a virus that can infect humans that can carry small RNA sequences in dividing cells only
Lentivirus a retrovirus that is known to to cause serious disease in humans, but can be inactivated to carry small RNA sequences into a variety of cell types efficiently
