Unit 8 review

Review terms from Changes in Ecosystems Unit

TermDefinition
Phototropism The movement or growth of a plant toward light
Geotropism The growth of plants against or with gravity
Hydrotropism The growth of roots toward water
Dormancy The period of time when a plant will shut down/slow all major life processes
Hibernation The period of time when an animal will slow down life processes to survive a change in temperature
Eutrophication Excess nutrients in the water cause an algal bloom that will lead to plant death and a dead zone.
Circadian Rhythm Internal Clock- the natural periods of being awake or asleep
Short Term Changes Happen quickly and allow no time for organisms to adapt
Long Term Changes Happen slowly over a long period of time and allow for adaptations or migration
Global Warming The increase in the Earth's temperature due to excess greenhouse gases (like CO2)
What can cause land pollution? Trash, waste, fertilizers and chemicals
What can we do to stop creating endangered species? Build national parks or wildlife preserves
What negative impacts can climate change have? Sea level rise, ocean acidification, extreme storms, droughts, melting glaciers
As food harvest demands increase what do we need more of? More land for agriculture
Examples of short term changes to the environment Tornados, oil spill, hurricanes, and other natural disasters
Examples of long term changes to the environment Global warming, melting ice caps, mining, urbanization, deforestation
What happens to dissolved oxygen when eutrophication occurs? The amount of oxygen decreases
If yeast if fed sugar (its food) what would happen to its population? It would increase
How does ocean acidification impact the environment? It makes the ocean more acidic making it harder for organisms to survive
What are the impacts of deforestation Less Oxygen, more CO2, more water runoff, less filtering of water, less homes for animals, more soil erosion
Population All the same species in the same area
What is a carbon footprint? This is the amount of carbon you put into the environment through your daily life
Renewable resources Resources that are clean and can be used again Example: Solar, water
Non-renewable resources Resources that can only be used once Example: Gas, coal

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
