Homeostasis the process of maintaining a constant internal Environment
Receptors special cells that detect stimuli
Stimulus any factor that stimulates a receptor and brings about a response
Negative feedback a response that reduces the original stimulus
Positive feedback a response that amplifies the output to a stimulus
Dendrite branches from the cell body that receive messages from other neurons
Nucleus roundish structure inside a cell that acts as the control centre for the cell
Cell body the part of the neuron that contains the nucleus
Axon a nerve fibre that sends nerve impulses away from the cell body
Myelin Sheath the insulating layer that covers a neuron
Schwann cell Cells that produce myelin
Node of Ranvier A gap in the myelin sheath to increase speed of impulse
Axon terminals Axon ending that connect to an effector or another neuron
Neuron A nerve cell
Central nervous system (CNS) the brain and the spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) the nerves that carry messages to and from the central nervous system and other parts of the body
Nerve impulse the electrical message carried by a nerve cell
Motor neurons nerve cells that carry messages from the CNS to effectors
Sensory neurons nerve cells that carry messages from cells in the sense organs to the CNS
Interneurons nerve cell that transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons
neurotransmitters chemicals released by axon terminals into the synapse that are detected by neighbouring neurons.
Reflex quick, automatic actions that protect the body from danger; they are also known as reflexes
Somatic nervous system part of the nervous system that coordinates the movement of the body and receives information from the sensory organs
Autonomic nervous system the system controlling involuntary actions such as the heartbeat
Parasympathetic nervous system part of the nervous system that slows the body down and controls it when it is resting. Rest and Digest
Sympathetic nervous system part of the nervous system that speeds up the functions of the body and makes the body work more efficiently. Fight or Flight
Hormones chemical substances that act as messengers in the body
Endocrine glands glands that produce hormones
Target cells the cells on which a hormone acts

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
