| Organic Compound | (AKA food) contains BOTH carbon and hydrogen |
| Inorganic Compound | does not contain both carbon and hydrogen; no calories |
| Calorie | a measure of the amount of energy in food |
| Large Organic Polymer | protein, carbohydrate or fat |
| Proteins | 3D molecule made of repeating amino acids |
| Amino Acids | building block of proteins (NCC) |
| Carbohydrates | source of quick energy; made of simple sugars |
| Starch | source of quick energy; made of simple sugars |
| Simple Sugar | used by mitochondria for energy; glucose for example |
| Fats | long term energy storage |
| Water/H2O | Inorganic compound that dissolves substances |
| Fiber | cell walls that help move food through digestive tract |
| Cellulose | indigestible starch found in cell walls |
| Minerals | inorganic compounds important for metabolism Example: salts, calcium, potassium |
