| artificial selection | the process by which humans select desired traits in a population through controlled breeding |
| overproduction | one of the ideas of natural selection in which organisms produce more offspring than can survive to adulthood |
| genetic variation | the variations of a trait that exist within a population |
| mutation | a change in the genetic material (DNA) of an organism that can be passed on to their offspring |
| adaptation (noun) | a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| adapt (verb) | a process that happens to a species, not an individual, by which a helpful trait is spread through the population because those having the trait are more likely to reproduce |
| extinction | when all members of a species have died due to a natural disaster or the species inability to reproduce due to changes in the environment |
