artificial selection the process by which humans select desired traits in a population through controlled breeding
overproduction one of the ideas of natural selection in which organisms produce more offspring than can survive to adulthood
genetic variation the variations of a trait that exist within a population
mutation a change in the genetic material (DNA) of an organism that can be passed on to their offspring
adaptation (noun) a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce
adapt (verb) a process that happens to a species, not an individual, by which a helpful trait is spread through the population because those having the trait are more likely to reproduce
extinction when all members of a species have died due to a natural disaster or the species inability to reproduce due to changes in the environment
