QuestionAnswer
What are autotrophs? Can make their own food.
What are heterotrophs? Have to rely on the autotrophs for food.
What does ATP stand for? adenosine tri phosphate
How does ATP store it's energy? Stored inside the molecule by the bonds that connect the adenosine to the phosphate.
What are the three parts that make up ATP? Adenine+ribose --> adenosine
What did the scientist Van Helmont contribute to photosynthesis? stated that plants gain their mass from water intake.
What did the scientist Calvin contribute to photosynthesis? traced the pathway that carbon follows to make glucose. "Calvin Cycle or Dark reaction"
What did the scientist Priestley contribute to photosynthesis? Discovered that plants release oxygen
What is the photosynthesis equation? 6 H2O + 6 CO2 → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
What are the reactants to the photosynthesis equation? Water and carbon dioxide
What are the products of photosynthesis? Glucose and oxygen
Which region of the electromagnetic spectum is absorbed by chlorophyll? all but green. (red orange yellow blue violet)
What region is the electromagnetic spectrum is not absorbed very well? yellow
Which colors of visible light are of lower energy? red
What colors of visible light are of higher energy? violet
What is stroma? gel-like matrix that surronds the thylakoid
What is grana? sticks of thylakoid
What is thylakoid membranes? contains chlorophyll
What is chloroplast? carries out photosynthesis
What is chlorphyll? captures the light for photosynthesis
What are the products of the light dependent reaction? Oxygen NADP ATP
What are the product of the dark dependent reaction? PGAL
What is another name for the dark dependent reacton? Calvin Cycle
In which reaction (light/dark) is PGAL made? Dark
What is photosystem 1? were the chytophones carry the electrons to make ATP.
What effect does increasing temperatures have on photosynthesis? On the amount of photosynthesis takes place.
What effect does increasing light intensity have on photosynthesis? On the amount of photosynthesis takes place.
What is the difference between oxidation and reduction? Loses electrons oxidized then gains electrons reduced.
What color is the pigment chlorophyll? green
What color is the pigment xanthophll? yellow
What color is the pigment tannin? brown
What color is the pigment carotene? red
What is a pigment? a protein that reflects different colors.
How does the amount of storage of energy in an ATP molecule comopare to that of a glucose molecule? One glucose makes 36 ATP glycogen.
What part of photosynthesis occurs in the thylakoid membrane? light reaction
What part of the photosythesis occurs in the stroma? dark reaction
What is carbon fixation? Were CO2 is converted to sugar
What is stomata? pores that are used for gas exchange

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
