Ecology EOG Review

Review of vocabulary from ecology unit

TermDefinition
Limiting factors Factors that cause a decrease in population or even extinction. Examples can include lack of food, space, and water.
Food chain Levels include producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, decomposer (cycles nutrients)
Predator/prey relationship Relationship involves competition. An example of this type of relationship could be a fox and a rabbit.
Symbiotic relationship Relationship where both organisms benefit. An example of this type of relationship could be a clown fish and an anemone.
The Sun All energy comes from this!
Biotic factor Living factor that shapes its environment. Examples include aquatic plants, fish, amphibians, and algae.
Abiotic factor Non-living factor. Examples include rocks, temperature, light, water, etc.
Habitat The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism (where YOU live!)
Niche The role an organism plays in a community (an organism's job; what you do!).
Food chain Shows how energy flows starting from the Sun.
Food web Shows feeding relationships.
Bioaccumulation The accumulation of chemicals in an organism that it does not digest but as trophic level increases, so does the accumulated concentration of the chemical.
Autotroph Creates own energy (producer). An example of this would be a plant that creates energy through photosynthesis.
Heterotroph Has to consume other organisms in order to gain energy to carry out life processes (consumer).
