A Challenge Research

The Ear

TermDefinition
Auditory canal a passage that connects the outer ear with the eardrum; funnels sound toward the eardrum and protects the eardrum from injury
Auditory nerve the nerve that transmits sounds from the sensory portions of the ear to the brain
Cochlea spiral shaped form located at the end of the auditory canal; transmits soundwaves to the middle ear via vibrations; one of two main structures that make up the inner ear
Ear lobe lower part of the external ear; helps maintain balance and warm the ear
Eardrum thin membranes inside ears that vibrate when sound waves hit them; vibrations are converted into electrical signals & sent to your brain; the tympanum or tympanic membrane
Eustachian tube passageway between middle ear and pharynx that keeps air pressure equal on both sides of the eardrum, drains secretions from the middle ear, protects the middle ear from bacteria and viruses; the auditory tube
Incus a bone in the middle part of the ear that receives vibrations and helps transmit them to the cochlea; the "anvil"
Malleus connects to the eardrum; transmits sound vibrations from the eardrum to the incus; the "hammer"
oval window membranous, oval opening in the cochlea that transmits vibrations from the tiny bones of the middle ear to the the upper part of the cochlea
pinna act as a kind of funnel which assists in directing the sound further into the ear.
round window membranous opening that moderates pressure between the middle ear and the cochlea by bulging when pressure builds
semicircular canals a type of movement sensor; lined w/ microscopic hairs (cilia) , filled w/ liquid substance; every time the head moves, the liquid moves the cilia, resulting in the brains ability to know how to keep the body balanced
stapes smallest bone in the body; transmits sound vibrations from the incus to the oval window; the "stirrup"

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
