Immune System

TermDefinition
Pathogen a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease
Microbe a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation
Macrophage A type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills microorganisms, removes dead cells, and stimulates the action of other immune system cells
T cells A type of white blood cell. Helps protect the body from infection and may help fight cancer
B cells A type of white blood cell that makes antibodies
Antigens a toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies
Antibiotics A medicine that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms
Antibody a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen
Vaccine a substance used to stimulate immunity to a particular infectious disease or pathogen
Herd Immunity resistance to the spread of an infectious disease within a population that is based on pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of individuals as a result of previous infection or vaccination
Antivirals an antiviral drug or medicine
Mutate change or cause to change in form or nature
