Chapter 20 lesson 1-3 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Orbit The path an object follows as it moves around another object
Revolution The motion around another object
Rotation A spinning motion
Rotation axis The line on which an object rotates
Solstice A day when the Earth's rotation axis is the most towards or away from the Sun
Equinox A day when the Earth's rotation axis is leaning along the Earth's orbit, neither toward nor away from the Sun
Maria The large, dark flat areas on the Moon
Phase The portion of the Moon or a planet reflecting light
Waxing Phases More if the Moon's near side is lit each night
Waning phases Less of the Moon's near side is lit each night
Umbra The central, darker part of a shadow where light is totally blocked
Penumbra The lighter part of a shadow where the light is partially blocked
Solar Eclipse When the Moon's shadow appears on Earth's surface
Lunar Eclipse When the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow.
Tide The daily rise and all of sea level
