Biogeochemical Cycle

TermDefinition
Element Cycling the breakdown of organic matter into its constituent elements for re-use in the ecosystem.
Chemical Elements a chemical substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
Molecule a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Compound a chemical substance composed of many identical molecules.
Biomolecules an organic molecule that is important to the survival of organisms.
Reservoir a man made lake for storing water.
Biosphere anywhere on earth were life exists.
Hydrosphere all of the water present on earth, whether on the surface, below the surface, and in the air.
Atmosphere a layer or layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body.
Law of Conservation of Mass matter can neither be created or destroyed.
Geological Carbon Cycle the process of storing carbon dioxide in underground geologic formations.
Biological Carbon Cycle the rapid exchange of carbon among living things.
Mycorrhizae a symbiotic association between a fungus and a plant.
Mycelia root-like structures of fungi consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae.
Nitrogen Fixation a chemical process by which molecular nitrogen is converted into ammonia.
Nitrification a microbial process by which nitrogen compounds are sequentially oxidized to nitrite and nitrate.
Anaerobic without the use of oxygen.
Denitrification the microbial process of reducing nitrate and nitrite to gaseous forms of nitrogen.
Water Cycle a biogeochemical cycle the describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the earth.
Evaporation the conversion of a liquid into a gas.
Transpiration the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts such as leaves
Condensation the conversion of a gas into a liquid.
Precipitation water which has condensed in the atmosphere and fallen to the earth's surface.
Aquifiers an underground layer of permeable, water-bearing rock which can contain or transmit ground water.
Runoff precipitation that has fallen somewhere that it can't permeate.
Eutrophication process by which a body of water or sections of one gradually become enriched with minerals and nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus.
Greenhouse Gases gases that absorb and transmit radiant energy at thermal infrared wavelengths, producing the greenhouse effect.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
