Chapter 30

Biol

TermDefinition
Ovule consists of a megasporangium megaspore and one or more protective integuments- will become the single seed
megasporangium structure of plant body that contains a female reproductive organ
megaspore larger of the 2 kinds of spores produced by heterosporous plants
integuments protective layering
pollination transfer of pollen to the parts of a seed plant containing the ovules- getting it to the part of the plant but not fertilization-no longer need water to travel for pollination
cones gymnosperms- naked seeds and seeds that are exposed on sporophylls that form cones
flowers angiosperms are seed plants with reproductive structures called flowers structure- specialized shoot with up to 4 types of modified leaved function-sexual reproduction
Sepal enclose the flower
petal brightly colored and attracts pollinators
stamens -produce pollen -stalk called a filament -a sac called an anther- which is where the pollen is produced
carpels produce ovules
fruits structure-typically consists of a mature ovary but can also include other flower parts function- protect seeds and aide in their dispersal -can be fleshy or dry
filament long stem leading up to the anther
anther where pollen is produced
carpel -ovary at the base -style leading up to the stigma -where pollen is received
ovary found at the base of the style
style between the stigma and the ovary
stigma most external piece at the end of the style -where the pollen lands
cross-pollination most flowers have mechanisms to ensure cross pollination between flowers from different plants of the same species
micropyle ovule is entered by a pore called micropyle
double fertilization occurs when pollen tube discharges 2 sperm into female gametophyte within an ovule
endosperm one sperm fertilizes the egg while the other combines with 2 nuclei in the central cell of the female gametophyte -initiates development of food storing endosperm
cotylendons within the seed the embryo consists of a root and 2 seed leaves called cotylendons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
