Chapter 29
Biol
Term | Definition |
---|---|
sporopollenin | structure-a layer of durable polymer function- prevents exposed zygotes from dying out- found in spore walls |
embryophtes | plants with embryos- land plants are called this because of the dependency of the embryo on the parent |
placental transfer cells | nutrients are transferred from parent to embryo |
gametophyte | haploid and produces haploid gametes by mitosis |
sporophyte | fusion of gametes gives rise to diploid sporophytes that produce haploid spores by meiosis |
sporangia | sporophytes produce spores in organs called sporangia |
sporocytes | diploid cells called sporophytes undergo meiosis to generate haploid spores |
gametangia | organs in which gametes are produced |
archegonia | female gametangia that produce eggs and are the site of fertilization |
cuticle | structure- waxy covering of the epidermis function-prevent water loss |
mycorrhizae | symbiotic association between fungi and land plants that may have helped plants without true roots to obtain nutrients |
vascular tissue | transport tissue- land plants can be informally grouped based on presence or absence of- allows for increased height which provides an evolutionary advantage to obtain more sunlight |
seed | embryo and nutrients surrounded by a protective coating |
secondary compounds | deter herbivores and parasites |
sporophylls | Modified leaves with sporangia that produce spores |
sori | cluster of sporangia on the undersides of sporophylls |
homosporous | producing one type of spore that develops into a bisexual gametophyte |
heterosporous | all seed plants and some seedless vascular plants- produce megaspores |
megaspores | gives rise to female gametophytes |
microspores | gives rise to male gametophytes |
roots | organs that anchor vascular plants- enable vascular plants to absorb water and nutrients from the soil- evolved from subterranean stems |
leaves | organs that increase the surface area of vascular plants, there by capturing more solar energy that is used for photosynthesis |
microphylls | leaves with a single vein |
megaphylls | leaves with a highly branched vascular system |
