| Metaphor | A comparison of two unalike things by stating one thing is something else. |
| Onomatopoea | the use of words that imitate sound |
| Personification | A thing, animal, or an abstract term is given human characteristics or qualities. |
| Simile | A comparison of two things, connected by the words like or as. |
| Symbol | An object used to represent an idea or a feeling. |
| Rhyming couplet | A two line stanza in poetry, which tend to have lines of equal length and the last word in each line rhymes with the other line. |
