| Term | Definition |

| Genetics | the genetic properties or features of an organism, characteristics, etc. |
| Genes | a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring. |
| Genotype | the genetic constitution of an individual organism. |
| Phenotype | the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. |
| Dominant | Dominant refers to the relationship between two versions of a gene. |
| Recessive | Refers to a trait that is expressed only when genotype is homozygous |
| Homozygous | The presence of two identical alleles at a particular gene locus. A homozygous genotype may include two normal alleles or two alleles that have the same variant. |
| Heterozygous | The presence of two different alleles at a particular gene locus. A heterozygous genotype may include one normal allele and one mutated allele or two different mutated alleles (compound heterozygote). |
| Alleles | One of two or more DNA sequences occurring at a particular gene locus. |
| Heredity | the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another. |
