Mendelian Genetics

Vocabulary I have to know

TermDefinition
Genetics the scientific study of genes and heredity
Genes The basic unit of heredity passed from parent to child.
Genotype the genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype The observable characteristics in an individual resulting from the expression of genes
Dominant the relationship between two versions of a gene.
Recessive a trait that is expressed only when genotype is homozygous
Heredity the passing of genetic information and traits (such as eye color and an increased chance of getting a certain disease) from parents to offspring.
Alleles One of two or more DNA sequences occurring at a particular gene locus.
Homozygot The presence of two identical alleles at a particular gene locus
Heterozygot having different alleles for a particular trait.
