| Genetics | the scientific study of genes and heredity |
| Genes | The basic unit of heredity passed from parent to child. |
| Genotype | the genetic makeup of an organism |
| Phenotype | The observable characteristics in an individual resulting from the expression of genes |
| Dominant | the relationship between two versions of a gene. |
| Recessive | a trait that is expressed only when genotype is homozygous |
| Heredity | the passing of genetic information and traits (such as eye color and an increased chance of getting a certain disease) from parents to offspring. |
| Alleles | One of two or more DNA sequences occurring at a particular gene locus. |
| Homozygot | The presence of two identical alleles at a particular gene locus |
| Heterozygot | having different alleles for a particular trait. |
